PFC Michael Perkins is killed in battle in France.

October 26, 1918

A South Boston resident and member of the 101st Infantry Unit of the 26th Yankee Division, he is killed by a shell while being treated for his injuries sustained in battle the day before. Perkins had single-handedly disabled a German pillbox, killed or wounded several of the machine gun grew, and taken more than 20 prisoners. Thousands of people attend his funeral when his body is brought back to South Boston in October 1921. Perkins is posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and a school and American Legion Post are named in his honor.
